Abrader

Title
Abrader
Description
Oblong stone cobble likely used as an abrader (sharpening stone) with long scratches on the surfaces running parallel to the length of the stone and a chipped appearance on one end.
During the Early Woodland Period, the Wampanoag began to favor bows and arrows to spears as their preferred hunting weapon. Hunting with arrows drastically changed food acquisition techniques for the Wampanoag and other Indigenous groups because, compared to spears, they are lighter, have a higher velocity, and allow a hunter multiple shots at a further range. Abraders like this one were rough slabs of stone that were used to smooth wood, bone, and other stone, and were now also used to shape and straighten arrow shafts.
